The “Oh’s and Why’s” of being a FILIPINA (based on my experiences and chats with my white male friends)
It’s been a year since I have set foot on the land of the free, I have met a variety of men through the online world and I must say- I AM NOT THEIR TYPE. Stereotypes, unfortunately, is inescapable and they have so many misconceptions that are answered by my stay here.
In the Philippines, it’s like a thing for Filipina women to like or to have huge crushes on white men and have that “American Dream” up in their heads. Minus the American dream thing- I’m practically part of it. Cinderella and getting swept off their feet by these “white men” can be seen mostly on the televisions, movies, and even book plots. We see many Filipina women getting married to white men and usually, these women are judged very harshly as they are seen as gold diggers. If there is one thing to note, is that the men that they usually end up with are “older”. That is one of the factors that I have noticed- older men would most likely consider a Filipina but it’s not the same for their young counterparts.
The men that I have encountered are between ages 18-25 and I have asked them about their thoughts on Filipinas- it’s hilarious but also shocking. It’s not true for all men but for some- here are their thoughts:
Now we all know that military bases in the Philippines usually have nearby whore houses where they can go to and “get good” for the night. It’s very sad to know that this is one of the things that they are well aware of. Of course, when they come back home to US- they would tell tales of their escapades which includes having a good time with Filipinas as a way of their relaxation.
Due to those stories, Filipinas upholds an undesiring image to US Militaries and it gives their friends the initial idea that we Filipina are very easy to get, dumb, and gold diggers.
YOU’RE NOT THAT TYPE OF “ASIAN”
When you meet someone online- of course you can’t see them and they can’t see you. So it is a process of getting to know each other blindly. Here is how I first met one of my friends and the conversation went.
Dude: I noticed you have an accent when you speak- where are you from?
Me: I’m Asian.
Dude: REALLY? That’s cool! What country specifically?
Me: Philippines. :)
Me: WHAT THE HECK IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? XD
Dude: You’re not that type of “Asian”
CANADA IS OURS
My Canadian friend feels like he is a minority because of the huge number of Filipinos in Canada. He said it’s like 3 out of 5 Canadians would probably be Filipino. He finds it unfair and he thinks that Filipinos should have their own race.
Female Friend: So what’s your type of men?
Me: I like white men but they don’t like me.
Female Friend: Dude* is white!
Dude: I DON’T LIKE FILIPINOS.
Me: I DON’T LIKE YOU IN PARTICULAR.
YOU’RE A 5
Me: On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate Filipinas?
For these youngsters- they are born in the era wherein white women are beautiful. Most of the dudes I talked to would prefer to date white women or “that type of Asian” than any other race. Coming from a different race, it’s just not considered beautiful for them. Of course, media has a lot to do with this, as well as genetics.
I’m pretty sure that for most of you guys- you at least know one person that works in a call-center. The country thrives in call center agencies and apparently, they are aware of this. I had this friend telling me that call center services in the Philippines is absolutely the worst, and apparently, he is not the only one who thinks like this. They don’t mind it being in the Philippines they just wish that the centers would hire capable people. The worse experience they get- the more they think low of us- being unable to answer and understand them correctly gives us bad points.
We all know that these are merely stereotypes but it’s hard to remove these connotations on us Filipinas. What we can do now is to continue proving them wrong and do better.
