I went to SM Megamall today to try ice skating for the first time. And since this is my first time, I learned a lot and discovered things that I should do if ever I’ll try to do this again in the future. I thought wearing pants would be enough to protect me from being cold, but it turned out, the temperature was not the only enemy inside the rink. So today, I decided to help first timers like me and give you guys some tips! CHOOSING AN ATTIRE Actually, you do not really have to follow what you find on google because most results are more appropriate in other countries with winter season. And since what we have here in the Philippines is a man-made ice skating rink, it’s not that cold in there and won’t require you to wear thick clothes or jackets. What I can suggest you is wear pants that you’d be comfortable enough to move and thick enough to avoid you from getting hurt when you fall. Also, this is the mistake that I have done: not wearing thick socks. I wore foot socks and the ice-skating shoes is too hard that it hurt my ankles so bad. I even had a bruise after ice-skating. SKATING PROPER At first, since I thought I was good at balancing, I didn’t book a lesson with a trainer, but I would highly encourage you to do so because the rink gets watery and slippery after an hour or two, and it will be harder for you to glide on the rink or to practice your balance. It will be better if there is someone professional looking after you and guiding you. But if ever you chose not to, here is what I did: I practiced first by balancing myself and skating at the side of the rink so whenever I feel that I’m going to fall, there’s always a bar that could support me and prevent me from falling. Fortunately, SM Ice skating rinks also offer this plastic bear that will serve as an alternative support and they call it trusty training polar bears! When my arms were already getting tired holding the bars at the side while practicing my balance, I already decided to rent the balancing polar bear. After a few glides holding the bear, I was able to balance myself and was able to go ice skating in the middle of the rink! That was really fun and exciting but also my legs got tired so easily. But overall, it was fun and thrilling! My overall advice is just work on your balance, and get comfortable with the fundamentals. I swear you'll figure it out yourself when you get there. Also, you can also watch others how they glide, how they stop, to hone your ice-balancing-skills! Good luck and have fun! SHARE THIS BLOG:
