Laban, Kabataan! Fun Run 2018, organized by UP Gamma Sigma Sorority, held on April 15, 2018, is a Run for a cause, for cancer patients, and their beneficiary is CancervantsPH. Since I have great interest in outdoor activities and any event that is held for a cause, I registered immediately. I was so excited to join because I registered the 10k run and this is going to be my first 10k run. What excites me the most was the inclusion of finisher's medal. I'm kind of collecting medals from all the runs I've been at so I told myself that I should try the 10k this time. There’s always a first time for everything anyway. I didn't train, although, I made time to jog at least once or twice a week in 3 weeks, so I don't really consider those jogs as trainings or preparation for my first 10k run. I decided to put on my title the word “review” because I noticed a lot of shortcomings from the event organizer even from the start of the registration especially on the event day itself. BEFORE THE RUN- REGISTRATION PERIOD Organizer managed to put up an online registration but the details on the provided google form was incomplete. The sizes for the singlets are not stated, the modes of payment or clear direction on how to register is also not included on the form. Because of that, I doubted that I will be completely registered on the fun run so I decided to personally register at their designated booths on their posted schedules. There were many times that we went to the booth location in different dates and different times, and yet the organizers are still not present despite of the continuous texting to the contact person. We kind of feel that the organizer was really not into this event and not paying attention to this properly. This was really disappointing. Also, the singlets were not given before the race. They kept saying that they will be distributing or the singlets will be ready for pick up “tomorrow” until a day before the run has passed, I still didn’t have my singlet on hand. THE FUN RUN They said gun start starts at 5AM. 10k run is the longest run and given that I attended previous marathons, the longest run should start the run first but they did it the other way around and we have no idea why they did that. At 5:30, they said that 10k runners will run first but then on the latter part, they announced that 1k runners will start first and run will start at exactly 6AM. Me and my friend went at the starting line around 4:30AM and it pissed me off because I was already done warming up, I was already starving, and I could already feel I wanted to poop and yet the run hasn’t started yet. 10k runners started running at 6:30AM. Another thing that shocked me is the route given to us. It was all uphill and downhill. It’s really hard running uphill and when you thought that it’ll be easier to run downhill then you are wrong. I kind of felt like I was going accumulate an injury because of this run. While I was running, I was already imagining myself ending up in a hospital. I was like an asthmatic girl grasping for breath every step I take and that’s just so hard. Another negative thing I noticed was, there were only four (as far as I remember) water stations in 10km run! (whuuuut??) I know, right? Major shocker! Nevertheless, I felt good after finishing the run. It was an achievement. It was my first time and I made it. I felt like this is the milestone in my “running life” so far. Maybe after trying many 10k runs, let’s go and try the 20 to 25k run! I did it, hooray! SHARE THIS:
